Struggling with feeling like your curls are weighed down or too heavy? You’re not alone!
“I think one of the biggest things people struggle with is feeling like their curls are being weighed down or getting that ‘triangle’ shape (the shape that forms when all the weight is at the bottom of the hair, making the top flat and an overall sort of bell shape),” says Lead Stylist Celeste, who specializes in curly hair.
So how can we get our curls to bounce back? Celeste recommends three solutions:
-
Add Layers:
To start, I would say one reason people start noticing more weight in their curls is being overdue for a haircut, so make sure you’re maintaining a regular haircutting schedule to keep on top of weight accumulation. And many times, when it comes to our curls feeling too heavy, all we really need is more layers! The shorter layers on top will bounce up, and then everything underneath has the room to live its curly life without being trapped under the weight of the top curls. If layers aren’t the look, strategically taking weight out of each curl clump could help as well. -
Switch Product:
Another reason folks might feel extra weight in their curls is that the products they’re using aren’t right for their hair. If you feel like your hair gets weighed down easily, try going for a lightweight product such as a curl-enhancing cream or a wave cream. A volumizing mousse like BODY.BUILDER will give you a bouncy/airy finish while still providing hold, definition, and volume. If you have more stubborn curls, a heavier product like KILLER.TWIRLS or even SMOOTH.AGAIN can help control curls and give guidance on where you want them to sit. For finer hair, something like MOTION.LOTION is great because it has a super soft finish.
All that being said, products are not a one-size-fits-all, so if you have any questions about what would be right for your specific curl type, talking to a stylist is the best way to find a good routine! -
Diffuse to Dry (and use gravity to your advantage!):
Using the diffuser attachment on your blow-dryer is a great way to add volume and definition to your curls because of how it disperses air. If you’re going for max volume, try diffusing your hair upside down. You can also dry leaning over to your side so that gravity is pulling the hair away from your head, opposite the direction it normally lies, to create more lift.
Feeling like you need a little more guidance? No problem! Your Haircut appointment (see tip #1) is a great time to discuss products and styling with your stylist and to see it happening in real time!
