Summer is here, and while the heat has been absolutely amazing for enjoying outdoor activities like camping, hiking, hanging at the park, and slowly melting under the sun, it has been decidedly less so for the feeling of our hair acting as a personal heater that just won’t quit.

To ensure you’re able to stay focused on the fun of the moment rather than the feeling of your hair sticking to your neck (a nightmare), Meg is showing us four super-easy bun hairstyles that are sure to become your new go-to because of how simple and effective they are. Bonus: None of these looks require any product, though feel free to use a little KEVIN.MURPHY FRESH.HAIR if your hair is asking for it!

Three of the hairstyles are actually different renditions of the same look, which is great because getting the hang of the first one means you can basically already do the others, but also because:

  1. It allows you to add variety with, literally, basically zero effort, so everyone will be like, “Omg, you’re so stylish,” and you’ll be like, “Yes, thank you, there’s really nothing to it.”

  2. It means you’ll be able to pull your hair up and out of your way even if you don’t have one of the required accessories (or if you are coming startlingly close to a heat-induced rage and just need to secure it with the closest item to you before impulse buzzing all of it off entirely).

Now let’s be clear: Perfection is NOT the name of the game here. It is hot, y’all. Let’s keep things as simple and stress free and without heat exhaustion as possible. The beauty of these hairstyles is how they look the idea of perfection in the eye and scoff, instead coming together quickly, easily, and with very little effort and STILL looking great.

Simple Bun

You’ll need:
1-2 hair elastics

Steps:

  1. Gather all of your hair in a ponytail and secure with a hair elastic. Meg has hers higher on her head, but adjust the position to suit your needs.
  2. Take the hair from the ponytail and wrap it around the base (where the hair elastic is sitting) until you reach the end.
  3. Tuck in the ends and secure with a second elastic.

P.S. Only have one hair elastic? The first is totally optional! To create your bun without it, simply gather the hair as you would to create a ponytail and go straight to wrapping it around the base.

Jaw Clip Bun

You’ll need:
1 jaw clip, sized for your hair thickness

Steps:

  1. Gather your hair as you would for a ponytail (do not secure).
  2. Begin wrapping hair around itself, leaving a small tail.
  3. Open the jaw clip and use the teeth of one side to scoop both the bottom of your bun and the small tail.
  4. Release hold on the clip to close it, bringing the teeth of the other side down to scoop up the hair nearest your scalp to secure the bun.

Hair Stick Bun

You’ll need:
1-2 hair sticks (do not stress if you don’t have hair sticks; any straight, stick-like object that will not injure you such as chopsticks will work fine. Meg is using biodegradable pencils.)

Steps:

  1. Gather your hair as you would for a ponytail (do not secure).
  2. Wrap hair around itself to create a bun.
  3. Take one hair stick and insert it a small way into the top of the bun, pointing in an upward direction.
  4. Create a sort of swooping motion with the stick, angling it back down and pushing it into the hair closest to your scalp, then back out through the bun.
  5. For added security, repeat with a second hair stick.

Twisty Bun Pigtails

You’ll need:
2 hair elastics

Steps:

  1. Roughly part your hair into two sections on either side of your head.
  2. Secure each section with a hair elastic. Now you have pigtails!
  3. Take one of the pigtails and create a space in the center of the hair on the side of the elastic closest to your head.
  4. Push your hair through the hole in the direction of your head (so it sits flat when you pull it tight, rather than creating a fountain like it would if you pushed it through the hole from the opposite direction).
  5. Wrap the hair around itself to create a bun, leaving a small tail.
  6. Pull the tail through one of the loops of the elastic you used to create the pigtail to secure.
  7. Repeat on the other side.

There you have it, folks—when summer gets too hot, just bun and done! We hope this helps. (We’re already using some of them ourselves!)

And if you are actually ready for a haircut, Meg can help with that too. Schedule with her in our Slabtown location by calling/texting 971.267.4080 or through the link below.
