Experiencing dry scalp? Flaky irritation? Itching or slow hair growth?

Scalp troubles can be frustrating. Our stylists are breaking down what causes scalp buildup, and what we can do to promote happy scalp experiences, starting with the product line we recently introduced into the salon: evo scalp.

evo™ is an Australian-based haircare brand on a mission, “to grow and protect the hairdressing industry by providing salons across the globe with honest products that put performance, people and the planet first.” Their scalp line, which is available for retail purchase in the salon, is great for anyone who has a scalp (that’s you!) and particularly welcomed by scalps experiencing itching, dryness, flaking, oiliness, and irritation.

Q: Why should we know about the evo scalp care products?
Reegan: Evo is a scalp-first haircare company—they know how delicate the balance of your scalp health can be and keep it top of mind. Their system can be layered together to give you a luxurious home care routine or used individually to target a specific need.

head start scalp exfoliator—Think of this as your buildup remover. It exfoliates, balances, stimulates, and calms your scalp.

common ground scalp shampoo—Your gentle shampoo. It cleanses and balances the scalp while improving softness and shine and hydrating the scalp barrier.

ground control scalp treatment—A wash-out treatment you use in the shower to help hydrate and support the scalp while calming inflammation and irritation.

home base scalp serum—A leave-in treatment to help soothe irritation, regulate oil production, and leave your scalp locked in with hydration.

Q: What causes scalp buildup?
Hanna: Buildup on our scalp refers to the residue of sweat, oils, or even product that doesn’t get fully washed out. It can also be caused by sleeping with wet hair, which creates an environment on our scalp for bacteria to form and cause flaky scalp and skin buildup that feels tough to shampoo out.

Q: Is rosemary oil good for hair growth?
Dayla: While the science is still a little undecided, many people feel that rosemary oil can be very beneficial for your scalp. Perhaps more important than the oil itself is the act of massaging and stimulating your scalp and follicles. Massage can exfoliate the scalp and encourage better circulation, which helps keep your follicles active and growing hair! And remember, never use undiluted essential oils directly on your skin; this can lead to irritation.

Q: What is a scalp scrub and do I need one?
Reegan: A scalp scrub is something that helps get dead skin cells, product buildup, oils that have collected over time, etc., off the scalp during your wash time.
If you are someone who uses a lot of dry shampoo, you have extra oils (especially in summertime), you find that there is dryness around your hairline, or you go multiple days between washes, these are all reasons why a scalp scrub could benefit you!

Q: How do I do a scalp treatment at home?
Dayla: An at-home scalp treatment can be a great way to relax and get connected with your body! Before washing your hair, brush it through with a stiff bristle brush like a boar bristle to begin lifting any buildup from your scalp. Wet your hair in the shower and then massage a scalp exfoliator, such as evo’s head start, in with your fingers for a few minutes to really get that circulation going. Follow up with a double hair wash using a clarifying shampoo, such as the common ground scalp shampoo from evo. Some clarifying shampoos contain tea tree or menthol, which can give you a cool, fresh feeling, but can also be more irritating to sensitive scalps, so use your discretion. Next, use a lightweight conditioner all over, roots to ends, to help rehydrate and balance your scalp's pH. To really treat yourself, finish with a few drops of a serum, like the home base serum from evo, for an extra boost of hydration. Apply the serum directly to your scalp, massage in with your fingers, and style as you normally would! Your follicles will thank you.

Q: How do I treat a dry, flaky scalp?
Hanna: Scalp health is so crucial to happy hair. A proper balance of the natural oils our scalp produces helps protect against dryness, brittleness, and breakage, as well as UV exposure. A dry and/or itchy scalp or an overly oily scalp can be a sign of imbalance in our scalp environment.

If you are experiencing a scalp oil imbalance, using a pre-shampooing treatment, like the evo pre-wash treatment head start scalp exfoliator, can help remove any dead skin or oil buildup and clean the scalp for a clean reset. In addition, including a clarifying shampoo, like evo’s common ground, in your haircare routine can help keep your scalp clean of any oil or skin buildup.

If dryness is an issue, evo’s ground control scalp treatment can help keep your scalp moisturized and hair follicles healthy, and if it continues, the evo home base scalp serum can help add more moisture to the trouble spots. We also offer our in-salon Scalp Treatment service to help remove excess skin and buildup!

If you are experiencing any redness, bleeding or discomfort, see your doctor or dermatologist for more information.
