Ginger & Maude® Hair Salons are committed to sustainability and to protecting our planet during our day-to-day operations as much as possible. This included figuring out how to recycle many types of beauty waste, such as used foils, color tubes, hair clippings, and excess hair color, which are not recyclable through the local recycling program that we have always participated in.
In 2018, Ginger & Maude Hair Salon became a Certified Sustainable salon brand with Green Circle Salons. For the unfamiliar, Green Circle Salons provides a pathway to sustainability for the beauty industry in North America by taking beauty waste and turning it into a variety of beneficial materials and products. For example:
Recovered hair can be:
- Composted with organic materials
- Repurposed into bio-composite products like sustainable combs
- Used in environmental and humanitarian applications
- Studied for future clean-tech innovation
Recovered metals are:
- Cleaned to remove chemical contaminants
- Melted down and reused multiple times
- Kept out of landfill where contamination prevents recycling
- Returned to manufacturing as new metal products
Recovered color waste is:
- Safely incinerated in a closed-loop system
- Converted into energy for local power grids
- Prevented from entering water systems and soil
- Kept out of plumbing and wastewater streams
Recovered plastics are:
- Sorted and processed by material type
- Mechanically recycled and re-pelletized
- Used to create new plastic products

We are incredibly grateful for the ability to recycle and recover the majority of our beauty waste through our partnership with Green Circle Salons. We are grateful to you, too, for supporting us in our efforts every time you visit one of our salons. 💗
