If you’ve noticed your strands looking dull and lackluster, or feeling more brittle and prone to breakage with an increase in split ends and flyaways, you might be experiencing dry hair.
Essentially, dry hair is hair that is not getting or retaining enough moisture. When this happens, the hair’s cuticle becomes rough and unable to hold onto necessary oils, leading to the above-mentioned troubles. Today, Molly is letting us know what causes dry hair and what we can do to help treat it.
What causes dry hair?
Dry hair can be caused by all sorts of things! Over-washing or too infrequent washing, not getting enough conditioner or moisture through to the ends, environmental factors, seasonal changes, using the wrong products or not enough product can all lead to dry hair. Chemical damage and heat styling can make hair feel dry or brittle as well.
What products do you recommend for folks with dry hair?
STAYING.ALIVE:
What it is: A leave-in conditioning spray that detangles, nourishes, and smooths brittle ends.
Why I recommend it: It's super light, and can help repair damaged, color-treated hair without feeling overly product-y.
Great for: I use this on most clients before any styling products to even texture and porosity before a blow-dry or style. This is great for all hair types, but especially dry or damaged hair.
YOUNG.AGAIN:
What it is: A hydrating treatment oil that instantly gives softness and shine.
Why I recommend it: I recommend this anytime a client tells me their hair is feeling lackluster or dry. It is such an easy step to add into your hair routine because it can go in wet or dry. I also love this product for refreshing curly looks!
Great for: This is great for all hair types! For finer hair, I would recommend starting with a pea-sized amount just on the ends.
NIGHT.SHIFT:
What it is: A hydrating overnight treatment.
Why I recommend it: It’s a perfect addition to a nighttime regimen! This is a serum that gives you softness and strength while you sleep.
Great for: It’s great for all hair types and most helpful for people who are trying to retain moisture while not shampooing every day.
ANGEL.MASQUE:
What it is: A strengthening and thickening mask.
Why I recommend it: This is an awesome option for people looking to give limp or lifeless hair a boost. It will help to repair damaged hair while adding volume and shine.
Great for: This is perfect for fine or damaged hair.
YOUNG.AGAIN.MASQUE:
What it is: A rejuvenating and softening mask.
Why I recommend it: It’s deeply conditioning, softening the hair while restoring moisture and shine.
Great for: This is a great option for long/extra-long, thick, or coarse hair.
HYDRATE-ME.MASQUE:
What it is: A moisturizing and smoothing mask.
Why I recommend it: This is the perfect silky, luxurious, nourishing hair mask. It makes hair shiny and just completely brings it back to life… This is definitely one of my favorite KEVIN.MURPHY products!
Great for: This is totally an everybody product, but I especially love it for curly hair. It makes curls so happy and bouncy!
Any other tips for preventing/remedying dry hair?
Altering your wash cycle: If you’re washing too often, you could be drying out your scalp and hair strands. If you’re not washing enough, you might have overly oily roots, but dry, brittle ends.
Sleeping in a silk bonnet or using a silk pillowcase: This will reduce friction between your head and the pillowcase, as well as keep the natural oils on your hair strands and off your pillow.
Add a Deep Treatment onto your next service: Our Deep Treatment is designed to moisturize and strengthen your tresses while being customized to meet your hair’s individual needs. It’s the perfect way to give your hair a little extra boost of nourishment.
