If you’ve been swimming frequently and have also experienced…
-dry hair
-split ends
-green hair or discoloration
-brittle hair
Kel says you may be experiencing what is known as “swimmer’s hair,” or hair that has been damaged by exposure to chlorine.
While great for keeping the pool water we swim in clean, Kel says, “our frenemy chlorine can actually be pretty damaging to your lovely locks. Chlorine can strip your hair of its protective oils, leaving it dry and prone to breakage, which is why your hair can feel rough and tangly after a swim or soak in a hot tub. It also reacts with metals, like copper, in the water, making it easier for them to bind with your hair (which is what causes the green tint), AND it can fade that beautiful color you just paid for!”
But before you throw in the towel on swimming completely, Kel says there are ways to protect your hair and deter damage from occurring.
Wear a swim cap
This is going to be the most surefire way to protect your hair from being damaged by chlorine because it prevents it from being exposed to chlorine in the first place. If you’re not feeling particularly eager to don a swim cap at the pool, here are a few other things you can do.
Rinse your hair
Prior to swimming, wet your hair fully with regular fresh water, and then liberally apply a leave-in conditioner, such as KEVIN.MURPHY UN.TANGLED. This creates a barrier and limits chlorine absorption.
Wash your hair with a detox shampoo
Immediately after swimming, wash your hair with a detox shampoo, like KEVIN.MURPHY MAXI.WASH. This will help remove all the chlorine and any impurities from your hair.
Come in for a treatment
If you’re swimming a lot, it can be helpful to ask your stylist about adding a Malibu C treatment onto your service. In particular, I recommend:
Malibu C Swimmers: Helps neutralize chlorine and remove copper and other pool elements, reducing discoloration and leaving your hair softer, shinier, and healthier.
Malibu C Crystal Gel: Removes environmental and product buildup and hard water minerals from the scalp and hair, reducing discoloration and improving softness, shine, and manageability.
Your stylist can help you decide which treatment would be best for your hair.
