Q: Why do products for curly hair often make it crunchy?
The "crunchiness" comes from products like gels or mousses that help set the curl in place while the hair dries. The less a curl moves while drying, the longer the curl will stay coiled!
Q: What are your favorite products for curly hair that define without crunching?
My favorite products for curl definition with no crunch are KILLER.CURLS and KILLER.TWIRLS by KEVIN.MURPHY. Both work great for either blow-drying or air-drying.
KILLER.CURLS is a curl lotion that helps lock in hydration for soft and shiny curls. It’s a little lighter. I recommend it for people who have more of a spiral-kind of curl to their hair and who want something that is going to be easy-breezy, low-maintenance, not a lot of extra work.
Just run it through your hair and then scrunch it in. You can do a little finger-twirling as well, and this is going to give you some really soft, shiny curls with zero crunch. It’s just going to be really soft and conditioned the whole way.
KILLER.TWIRLS is more of a custard consistency; it’s got a little more heft to it. It is an air-dry styling cream, and I recommend it if you’re looking for more of those alternative styles, like shags and wolf cuts, etc., and you’ve got some curly and waves. You can work it in and do a little more hand-styling and detailing with it.
Rake it through your hair, do that little scrunch, twist and twirl them into place to your desire, and then let it go. Once your hair is dry, scrunch it on through, give it a little shake, and then you’ll have perfectly set, soft and bouncy curls and waves with more body.
If you want to use a blow-dryer with either of these products, I would recommend using a diffuser. Start by circling your head from far away, and then bring it in closer as your hair gets drier, and they should both hold up really well for you.
Q: Why does curly hair "fall" or lose definition?
Curls can fall and become undefined with friction, gravity, sweat, any kind of living, really! If you want your curls to last longer, give them some body and memory with a curly product or two. Even a little spritz of a water bottle or leave-in conditioner can refresh a fallen curl. Our hair can do so well with a little extra help! To really set a lasting curl, layer in your products and diffuse your curls with a hair dryer on low, and sleep with a silk or satin pillowcase or bonnet.
Q: What should I look for in a curly care product?
Depending on your styling preferences, look for cue words like soft, shine, hold, foam, cream, gel, bounce. If you want hydrated, soft curls with no crunch, look for creams and lotions. If you want lasting hold for a curl set, look for a gel or mousse for body.
When looking for products, consider:
-How dense is the hair on my head? Thicker, denser hair can benefit from layering more product because the hair can absorb more. Always use curly styling products on wet hair!
-How fine or thick are my individual hair strands? Finer hair strands can get easily overwhelmed by heavy products like creams or strong gels, so a lighter curl lotion like KILLER.CURLS from KEVIN.MURPHY is a great choice.
