Let’s rewind for a moment, shall we? To a time of big, beautiful, bouncy blowouts that just screamed, “I am the most elegant person in this room and I’m not even trying.” Yes, we are talking about the ever-glamorous ‘90s blowout, iconic for its seemingly effortless fullness, volume, and movement—it’s back, better than ever, and surprisingly simple to recreate at home. Robin is showing us how.
For this look, you’ll need:
-A hair dryer with a concentrator attachment (Looking for a new one? Check out this review by Deanna.)
-A 2.5” round brush
-A paddle brush
-Clips for securing hair back during the blow-dry
Now let’s talk about products. Robin is using:
KEVIN.MURPHY BODY.BUILDER for volume.
KEVIN.MURPHY SMOOTH.AGAIN for a sleek finish.
KEVIN.MURPHY YOUNG.AGAIN for heat protection, added shine, and repairing.
KEVIN.MURPHY FRESH.HAIR for a longer style and even more volume.
How to do it:
- Starting with towel-dried hair, apply BODY.BUILDER at the roots all over your head. Follow this up with a squirt of SMOOTH.AGAIN through your mids and ends, and another squirt of YOUNG.AGAIN through your mids and ends.
- Use a paddle brush to brush through and evenly distribute the product.
- Do a rough dry on your hair with the hair dryer (no attachment), getting it to around 80% dry.
- Secure the concentrator attachment to your hair dryer, and using the round brush, start with your bangs (if you don’t have bangs, skip to the next step!). Scoop the brush under your bangs and blow-dry, spinning the brush toward your face as you do so. Angle the longer side pieces out by scooping and brushing the hair away from your face as you blow-dry.
- Secure the top portion of your hair to focus on the lowest layer. Warm your brush a bit and then blow-dry in sections, making sure to take the hair out and away from your face as you do so. (Spoiler alert: you will be blow-drying your hair in this direction a lot.)
- Repeat throughout hair, securing hair as needed to make blow-drying easier. Ensure you are bringing each section out away from your head to create volume and spinning the brush away from your face as you brush down the length to create wavy movement. For the sections at the back, bring the hair out and toward your face while rotating the brush toward the back of your head.
- Do a final brush through the back using the paddle brush while continuing to blow dry.
- Set the cool temp on your blow dryer and aim up toward the roots at the hairline to help create and set lifting volume. Do a final blow-dry all over hair.
- Zhuzh hair using fingers and apply a final squirt of YOUNG.AGAIN to mids and ends.
- Finish by spraying FRESH.HAIR at the roots in sections and working it in with your fingers.
