Scalp feeling particularly dry, itchy, flaky, tight, or irritated? It might be dry scalp! Abbi is telling us more (including what we can do to find some relief).
Q: First things first, WHY is my scalp so dry and itchy? What causes dry scalp?
A: Dry scalp is generally caused by a lack of moisture or sebum (oils that your body produces on its own). While some people experience dry scalp frequently due to having drier skin or other skin conditions, it can also be experienced seasonally, and winter is generally a time when I hear from clients that their scalps are dry and itchy due to cold weather. Sometimes, product buildup on the scalp can also contribute, as it doesn't allow moisture to penetrate as effectively.
Q: Dry scalp vs dandruff: What’s the difference?
A: Dry scalp is caused by a lack of moisture and can be treated with exfoliation and added moisturization. Dandruff is actually a fungal condition that needs to be treated with something like a medicated shampoo. (Quick P.S. here that folks with various scalp conditions, such as eczema, psoriasis, some types of dermatitis, and severe dandruff (which is and does look different than dry scalp) should consult with their physician before trying anything listed here!)
Q: Recommendations on how to moisturize the scalp?
A: The easiest place to start is with your shampoo and conditioner. Typically, conditioner is recommended for mids-to-ends of the hair, but with a dry scalp, it can be helpful to apply it to your scalp as well. Scalp serums and masks can also be helpful for persistent dryness, as can exfoliating your scalp either by brushing or using a scrub to allow the moisturizers to penetrate further.
Q: What is the best shampoo for dry scalp?
A: A shampoo that is specifically recommended for scalps is a good place to start because it will have ingredients that focus on scalp and skin health. KEVIN.MURPHY STIMULATE-ME.WASH is a great option if dryness is caused by buildup because this shampoo has ingredients that help with gentle clarifying while also invigorating the scalp to get blood flowing and oils moving. HYDRATE-ME.WASH can be beneficial to get moisture into both the hair and scalp for a seasonal option when you might need something a bit heavier.
Q: Are there any dry scalp treatments I can get?
A: Yes! Ginger & Maude Hair Salon offers a really wonderful multi-step Scalp Treatment that includes an exfoliation to remove dry skin flakes, a balancing and moisturizing scalp mask involving rich oils and apple cider vinegar, and a massage to help work the product in as well as stimulate the scalp (and obviously, it feels great!). It can be booked as a standalone treatment or as part of your Haircut service.
Q: Any other dry scalp remedies you think folks should know about?
A: I actually like to recommend a silicone shampoo brush. They are a little circular doodad with soft silicone spikes and are great for a more consistent, gentle exfoliation and helping with any buildup. Something like this would feel great with the STIMULATE-ME.WASH!
