Q: What inspired you to become a hairstylist?
A: I’ve watched so many Instagram, YouTube, TikTok, Facebook—you name it—videos of people creating art with hair. Whether it was cuts, color, or styling, it was so mesmerizing to see how they were created and the transformation from before to after, whether it was something simple or bold. It was a form of art I wanted to try for myself.

Q: Why did you choose Ginger & Maude Hair Salon as home?
A: I chose Ginger & Maude as home because it felt like coming to another home. It was warm and welcoming, and it felt like I could grow and flourish into my full potential as a hairstylist.

Q: Tell us the styles and trends that have you the most excited right now.
A: People embracing their natural curls. Seeing the many different ways in which people style their own curls and discovering new techniques.

Q: What is currently your fave KEVIN.MURPHY product and why do you love it?
A: My favorite KEVIN.MURPHY product is KILLER.WAVES because I’ve seen so many of my clients who thought they had just a slight wave come out with beautiful beach curls or more curly than either one of us was expecting. It feels transformative. Seeing KILLER.WAVES help bring their curls to life is amazing, and seeing the client's reaction to how much curl they actually have makes me excited with them.

Q: When you aren’t in the salon, how are you most likely to be spending your time?
A: When I’m not at the salon, I am at home snuggling with my kitty, Merlin, reading or watching a good show, or hanging out with my friends at a coffee shop or bookstore.

Q: Go-to karaoke song?
A: “Mamma Mia” by ABBA is my go-to karaoke song

Q: What fantasy book are you hooked on at the moment? Why do you love it?
A: Right now, I am reading Sunrise on the Reaping. I can go on and on about why I’m hooked so far, but I’ll try to keep it brief. I’ve always loved The Hunger Games Trilogy, and they always mentioned Haymitch and how horrible he had it in his Hunger Games, but would never go into any detail—just that it was horrific. I had been waiting for this book for years and thought it would never come out. I got the second-to-last book in the whole store as soon as I found out it was released because I NEEDED to know what happened to Haymitch and how he became the way he was!

Q: Can you show us a quick and simple routine to prep our hair for air-drying?

A: Of course!

  1. For air-drying, start with your hair really wet.
Bonus haircare tip for people who feel they have dry hair, whether curly or straight: Try not to over-dry your hair with a towel. Squeeze out any excess water, and then put in your leave-in while it’s wet (less is more) and comb through. You’re not only using less product that could weigh down your hair (unless that’s what you’re wanting), but the product will help seal in the moisture from the water and the water will help make sure the product doesn’t just sit in one place. Wait until your hair is 100% dry to put oil in since it’ll repel the water from soaking in.)
  2. Squeeze out a quarter-sized amount of MOTION.LOTION, emulsify it a bit between your hands, and apply it all throughout your hair, using your fingers to rake it through.
  3. Squeeze out a dime-sized amount of KILLER.TWIRLS, emulsify, and apply to your midlengths and ends only. Once this is finished, you can gently run your fingers through your roots to apply any reminder.
  4. Starting at the lowest layer of your hair, brush in sections in an upward motion to create lift at the root. (Volume even while air-drying? Yes, please!)
  5. Take your hand and gently scrunch your hair up toward your scalp to help your curls form.
  6. Repeat steps 4 and 5 until all hair has been brushed and scrunch. Don’t be afraid to add more water! Especially when you’re working to set your hair for an air-dry, if you notice the top portion drying out before you’re ready to scrunch, add more water. Curls tend to run dry, and this can be made even more so by things like environmental stressors or coloring, so they’re generally reaching for moisture. Adding in more water as needed is helping to retain that moisture, which in turn helps to retain your curl pattern. I’ve also found that trying to style it once the product has been added and it’s started to dry can lead to more flyaways. By re-wetting, you have a better chance of the product distributing a lot nicer, leaving you with a smoother finish.
  7. Do one final scrunch through, holding your head forward, backward, and to either side to increase volume. Feel free to stand if it makes it easier, and move your curls gently so as not to disturb them too much.
  8. Bring your head back to center, make any final adjustments, and your ready for  your air-dry!
