She specializes in:
-Haircuts for straight and wavy hair
-Deep Treatments
-Scalp Treatments
Let’s get to know her a bit more, and as promised, learn her three tips for growing your hair out. (Pssst: Number 1 includes a bonus tip.)
Q: Tell us about yourself!
A: Hi!! I’m Melody! I’m a Scorpio sun and Gemini moon, a cat lover, and a defender of the little guy. You can usually catch me listening to an audiobook while I work on a crafty project, checking out a new restaurant or food cart, or hunting the thrift for treasures.
Q: What inspired you to become a hairstylist?
A: I was so burnt out after nearly a decade in the corporate world. I needed something a little more tactile and a little more human-centered. My sister-in-law encouraged me to look into cosmetology school, and I couldn’t pass up the opportunity to make people feel good about themselves every day!!
Q: What do you specialize in?
A: Haircutting is my jam! I love long layers, face-framing and bangs, and curls!!
Q: Let's talk about our tagline—'We don't just love hair, we love people.' How do you see Ginger & Maude Hair Salon being authentic to that, and how do you bring it to life?
A: I love Ginger & Maude’s dedication to making the salon an affirming and inclusive space for all bodies and gender expressions. It’s what initially drew me to the salon, and it’s what I’m proudest to represent.
Q: Tell us the styles and trends that have you the most excited right now?
A: I am loving the wave of folks learning about and embracing their natural texture! I love every opportunity to help people get excited about their curly hair.
Q: What is currently your fave KEVIN.MURPHY product and why do you love it?
A: HEATED.DEFENSE is my absolute favorite, and I use it on probably every single client. Heat protection, UV protection, and a little bit of hold—it’s the perfect base for any style.
Q: What’s your #1 audiobook recommendation?
A: Moira Quirk is an incredible voice actor—I could listen to her read the dictionary. She narrates one of my favorite books: Gideon the Ninth.
Q: What is a haircare tip you think everyone should know?
A: Actually, I have three for anyone who is working to grow their hair out:
-
Maintain a clean, healthy scalp: Buildup on your scalp can clog your follicles and stunt hair growth, so make sure you're really scrubbing your scalp when you shampoo. If you shampoo less frequently, with more than one or two days between washes, consider shampooing twice, so that you’re really removing any buildup.
BONUS TIP! Give yourself some scalp massages, either with your fingers or a scalp massager. It feels really good, and it stimulates blood flow to your scalp, which helps stimulate growth. -
Use proper sleep protection: Protecting your hair while you sleep will prevent breakage. I recommend a silk or satin pillowcase, a sleeping bonnet, or just avoiding harsh elastics, like a rubber band in your hair. Instead, you can use a silk or satin scrunchie, or a PuffCuff is a great idea for folks with curly or coily hair.
-
Get regular trims or shape-ups: If your hair is already long, hanging on to tired, damaged hair in the name of preserving length is working against your hair growth goals! Split ends are like a hangnail; if you don’t cut them off, they’re just gonna keep catching on everything and ripping further and further up the shaft, which shortens your hair over time. Regular trims will keep breakage at bay so your hair can grow longer, faster!
If you’re working to grow out a shorter haircut, regular shape-ups will help you get through those awkward stages. You don’t have to suffer! You are allowed to have a bomb haircut during EVERY stage of the grow-out process.
